Dior Couture: The making of the million flower set

Come behind-the-scenes as the Dior team painstakingly build the elaborate floral set for Raf Simons' couture debut in Paris.

There were peonies, goldenrod, dahlias, carnations, delphiniums, orchids and all kinds of roses. Flowers splayed from floor to ceiling.

'The décor for the haute couture presentation this season was an event unto itself' Dior say on their website. And they're not wrong.

It's easy sometimes for the pampered fashion editors, socialites, and celebrities perched on their Napolean III seats at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week to take their surroundings for granted, but no one attending the Dior show last week could have failed to be awed by the intensely beautiful set.

Created from one million fresh flowers painstakingly cut and arranged to decorate the walls of the five private salons playing host to Raf Simons' debut, the set has rightfully earned a short film paying tribute to the effort involved in bringing it to life.

We wonder what happened to all those flowers after the 15-minute presentation drew to a close and the beautiful people filed out. Perhaps Dior had them packed and sent to front row guest Princess Charlene of Monaco's palace? She's probably not short on vases…

From the exhibition Christian Dior & Chinese Artists, held at the UCCA in Beijing in 2008, to the Inspiration Dior exhibition in 2011 at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, which juxtaposed a dialogue between art and Haute Couture, the House of Dior is proud to announce a unique collaboration with Berlin-based artist Anselm Reyle.

Anselm Reyle immersed himself in the heart of Dior and was given carte blanche to create a collection of accessories. The artist played with colours, shaking up the codes of the mythical Avenue Montaigne Couture House, which offered all its savoir-faire to serve his imagination.

‘I loved working on the Lady Dior handbag. Most of my work builds on objects 

that already exist, which I then transform. I applied the same philosophy.’

Galliano Found Guilty

Since Feb we have been following the case of ex Dior designer John Galliano (full story click here), and Today we find out he has been found guilty of making anti-semitic and racist comments.

Galliano charges according to Elle, 'Galliano was issued a €4,000 suspended fine (only payable if he fails to comply with court orders) and instructed to pay a symbolic euro to two plaintiffs for the February 24 incident. He was also fined €2,000 suspended, for a separate event in October 2010. The sentence did not carry any jail time".

Galliano must be pleased with the No jail time (which in my opinion would be way to harsh and unneccessary), he would've faced a maximum charge of 6 months in jail and 22,500euros in fines. Luckily his prosecutors were lenient and made him pay upto 6000euros.

Considering Galliano state at the time apparently he was heading for a breakdown, Galliano admits "After every creative high I would crash, and the alcohol would help me to escape". Who knows what could've happened to him, he should see this as a blessing in disguise.

We hope Galliano continues rehab and leads a stable future in fashion, such a shame if he doesn't continue designing. A great talent would be missed!
